On December 21st Vermont Senator Jane Kitchel prefiled Senate Bill 269which relates to business consumer protection and data security breaches. This bill proposes to enhance the standards and requirements for a business to be notified of a possible data security breach and to be informed that it has legal duties under current law. The measure provides definitions for some of the following terms: data collector, encrypt, personally identifiable information, security breach, and more.

The Vermont General Assembly convenes on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at which time this bill may be considered. The rules governing the Vermont state legislature include bill introduction deadlines. According to House Rule 40(b), all requests for standard bills must be submitted to the Legislative Council by January 15, and introduced by January 31.
