Improved Web Application Development The new version of CACHE 2007 post-relational database from InterSystems Corporation now includes InterSystems Zen for quickly building rich platform-independent Web applications, and Jalapeno for the elimination of object relational mapping for Java programmers. Zen’s library of prebuilt components allows fast creation and management of complex processes, as well as an AJAX technology extension for RIA development and an advanced embedded security model. Prebuilt components can be extended or new in-house code developed with its object-based extensibility. A shared object client/server data model improves developer productivity by eliminating the parsing of XML, with the application’s close database integration performance and scalability deployment going beyond traditional AJAX environments. CACHE’s Jalapeno allows persist capability of plain old Java objects while eliminating object relational mapping. Java developers can build database-independent applications while taking advantage of direct database access to CACHE without the overhead associated with SQL.

Medical Content Visualization Emageon has added new features to its Enterprise Visual Medical System (EVMS) version 5.30. The EVMS suite of products and services allows physicians and healthcare providers to manage clinical workflow and content management across the enterprise via a visual user interface. Among the new features are Technologist QC, which enables users to edit demographics, merge patient or studies, split studies and correct images from secure workstations in and outside of the enterprise. The new Personal Content Management Tool locally stores end-user selected and retrieved encrypted studies in a folder-based architecture. According to the company, this avoids the “push model” style found in many other systems, allowing simpler remote, on-call and at-home reading for remote/referring clinics. The Enhanced Web Admin feature gives PACS administrators, and Radiology IT and Radiology directors comprehensive data mining capabilities with reports, configuration tools, audit logs, policy-based deletion settings and more.

RFID Asset Tracking The Philips Asset Tracking Solution from Royal Philips Electronics in conjunction with AeroScout Inc. uses WiFi-based radio frequency ID (RFID) technology to provide a turn-key solution for locating hospital assets in order to improve efficiency, meet regulation requirements and deter theft or loss. Designed around each hospital’s specific use, the system includes wireless tags, a location engine and the MobileView user interface to transmit mobile asset location to an existing 802.11 wireless infrastructure for any networked hospital user. Philips states that Tucson Arizona’s University Medical Center has become the first and largest to implement the company’s WiFi-based asset management system covering eight floors, over a million square feet and 2,300 tagged assets that include a wide range of portable devices. The Asset Tracking Solution suite of services includes implementation, maintenance, operational and change management, as well as end user support and training. Royal Philips Electronics, Eindhoven,
