Show should satisfy scrutinizing session seekers

By Phil Colpas, Managing Editor

As you read this, you may well be on your way to New Orleans, site of HIMSS13, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s annual conference. Or, like thousands of your compatriots, you may have already arrived at

T e Big Easy. Based upon the turnout at recent shows, about 1,000 vendors and 30,000 attendees will descend upon T e Crescent City (NOLA really does have quite a few nicknames). HIMSS13 features an impressive array of keynote speakers, education sessions, state-of-the-art technology demonstrations, vendors touting their wares on the massive exhibition fl oor and much more. Although offi cially being held March 3-7 at New Orleans’ Ernest N. Mo-

rial Convention Center, early on-site registration at HIMSS actually begins Saturday, March 2, at noon. Saturday’s pre-show events include (*separate registration required): Nursing Informatics Symposium* (community recep- tion to follow), 1-5 p.m.; Meaningful Use Workshop, 1-5 p.m.; and a CIO Forum Opening Reception*, 6-8 p.m. T roughout the show, HIMSS13 educational content will feature top lead- ers, who will share their insights and lessons learned on today’s most critical topics. With more than 300 education sessions to choose from, healthcare professionals at all levels will be able to customize their own agenda to meet their individual needs. Twenty-three educational topic categories, vetted through a peer-review

process, include mobile health, business and clinical analytics, care coordina- tion, accountability for care and meaningful use. Session recordings packages will be available for $299 at the show and $399 after the show’s conclusion; the package contains more than 200 general education sessions. Session recordings are audio synchronized with the presenters’ slide presentations. Sessions from “HIT X.0” and “Leading from the Future” also include video. You will be able to download a PDF of the session handout, as well as an MP3 fi le of the audio. T is package does not include keynote sessions, pre- conference sessions, 300-level roundtable sessions, or sessions that were not authorized for release by the presenters. Select sessions will be certifi ed as credit for physician and nursing con- tinuing education (CE) and professional development units (PDUs). All session recordings may be applied to CPHIMS CE as well as CHCIO CEUs. Symposia (separate fees charged for each) will be held throughout the

conference on a number of topics, including: ICD-10, business intelligence, health information exchanges (HIEs), innovation, informatics, meaningful use (MU), radio frequency identifi cation (RFID), real-time locating systems (RTLS) and analytics. I'd like to invite you all to stop by our HMT booth (#1352) and par-

ticipate in TechTrek for a chance to win an iPad mini. Go to our website and sign up for our weekly e-newsletter for continuing HIMSS coverage.
