Two major healthcare systems give AT&T cloud-based imaging a shot

Baptist Health System, one of the largest healthcare systems in Alabama, and Henry


Ford Health System, an integrated health system based in Michigan, have signed on to pilot AT&T’s cloud-based Medical Imaging and Information Management Service, a vendor-neutral offering that combines AT&T Synaptic Storage as a Service with Acuo Technologies’ Universal Clinical Platform. The solution helps providers store, access, view and share patient medical images and information over a highly secure infrastructure. It works on a pay-as-you-go pricing model where providers pay per gigabyte, per month, for storage and get fast access to x-rays, MRIs and other digital im-


ages regardless of original capture device or equipment. As for backup, the service provides copies of data at two geographically diverse sites. Data is stored compressed and includes encryption at rest. For Baptist Health System, the new system will provide a single source for its physician community to access and share the more than 2 million images that it has accumulated and the 30,000 new images per month that it creates. At Henry Ford Health System, the plan is to store new cardiology medical imaging studies and to move other cardiology studies from its existing solution to the AT&T cloud. Signifi cant effi ciencies are expected to be gained from consolidated and expandable storage, providing anywhere access to cardiologists in various heart centers. Virtual exam room in the works for 2013 TELEMEDICINE


A joint development effort by UPMC and Alcatel-Lucent aims to


provide users with a virtual exam room by 2013. The solution will offer real-time clinical encounters using a secure Web portal designed to fi t the workfl ow of health- care providers and patients on the go. Patients will have access to both scheduled and emergency care from any location at any time through a variety of mobile devices using video and audio communication among multiple participants in multiple locations. At the same time, the system will securely generate, retrieve and store patient data “in a clinically relevant way.”


The platform is being developed along with Bell Labs,


Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, making use of advanced technologies such as immersive and cloud-based com- munications. Rebecca Kaul, president of UPMC’s Tech- nology Development Center, will co-manage the effort and help to oversee development teams in Pittsburgh and New Jersey.


“The challenge involved in creating this next-genera- tion telemedicine system is designing a true multi-point communication platform that allows everyone involved in the medical case to securely view the same data and medical records at the same time regardless of the com- munication device used,” says Sid Ahuja, vice president of Alcatel-Lucent Ventures, who will co-manage the initiative. “With cloud-based technologies, services and software applications are delivered from the Internet rather than a dedicated enterprise network in a single location, enabling a new level of medical collaboration and information sharing via secure real-time audio, video and data links.”


UPMC will consolidate its extensive telemedicine offerings on the new platform, with the goal of lowering costs and improving access to high-quality care.
