Paperless Payment Processing
Herae’s
new BPM products are aimed at introducing paperless processing into the
payment processing healthcare industry. They are designed to eliminate
the need for EOB (explanation of benefits) forms, checks and paper
envelops by electronically moving claims payment information from
insurance companies to physicians offices, allowing faster processing of
claims. The paperless process is HIPAA-compliant, automates
reassociation of claims and payments, includes direct-deposit, and
functions independently of a provider’s existing billing or practice
management software. The thin-client products are ASP-based and require
only that customers have a browser and Herae’s proprietary browser
tiling software (Viewpoint) on their computers.

Remote Coding Technology and
Services
CodeRunner
is an Internet-based remote coding system from MedQuist that converts
transcribed, faxed and scanned documents into active data files. Its
natural language processing (NLP) engine understands the spoken language
and “reads” ED charts. It then generates “suggested” codes, which it
stores for computer-assisted coding (CAC) and data mining. During the
coding process the product presents the codes, which the
transcriptionist changes or approves and then sends directly to billing.

RIS Management
Kodak
has released two new versions of its Radiology Information System (RIS).
The upgrade to the modular RIS 2010 installs in hospitals and healthcare
systems as a stand-alone product, or as part of Kodak’s integrated RIS/PACS
suite. A new product, Carestream RIS, contains features specifically
designed for imaging centers and also includes selected RIS 2010
functions. Both RISs are designed to manage patient scheduling, exam
orders and report dictation, as well as provide Web-based distribution
of radiology reports. Web-based functions also allow physicians to
access patient records and images from their home or office
workstations. Other features and volumes can be upgraded and expanded as
demands require, and open architecture allows both RISs to integrate
with third-party claims processing, billing and information management
systems worldwide.

Advance
Directives Module
Dialog
Medical has added an advance directives module to its iMedConsent
application. The product meets the requirements of the Patient
Self-determination Act of 1991 that requires hospitals to inform
patients of their rights in the medical decision-making process, and to
leave advance directives. The product enables competent patients to
provide signed documents that inform healthcare providers of their
specific treatment choices under certain circumstances, such as if the
patient becomes permanently unconscious. The patient can leave two
categories of advance directives—proxy and instructive. Proxy directives
are a “Durable Power of Attorney” that the patient uses to stipulate a
surrogate who will make decisions on his behalf, should the patient be
unable to do so. With instructive directives, patients specify their
preferences concerning therapy or classes of therapies. Patients sign a
digital signature pad that captures and attaches their signature to the
document. The application then saves an image of the document and flags
the patient’s EMR showing the presence of an advance directive.

Wireless EHR Solution
Source
Medical Solutions Inc. has released SourcePlus EHR for Cyramed EHR, the
company’s wireless electronic health records (EHR) solution for
ambulatory surgery and medical practices. The product is designed to aid
in the creation and management of patient records. Custom electronic
forms and templates can be designed to emulate their paper counterparts;
paper documents can be scanned and the information immediately inserted
into electronic charts; and radiology images can be dragged and dropped
directly onto patients’ records and annotated for future reference. The
product is HL7 compliant and interfaces with existing practice
management software. It keeps a HIPAA compliant log of staff activities
attached to each patient’s record, and includes Encoder Pro, a module
that contains relevant code sets and places them on the screen in code
books. Staff also can encrypt part or all of patients’ records and send
them to third parties, or copy the records to tablets or PCs for
off-site encounters. The product provides drug interaction checking
through its digital prescription module and drug database. Checked
interactions include: drug-to-drug, -herb, -food, -lifestyle and
-allergy. Task, fax, scheduling and messaging tools are also included.

HIPAA Compliant Wireless
Security
Interlink
Networks now offers LucidLink Wireless Security, geared toward small-
and medium-size medical practices and hospitals that transmit sensitive
information over any 802.11 a/b/g wireless network. The software offers
the same level of strong security in use at large hospitals and prevents
unauthorized network access by hackers. It authenticates users and keeps
detailed usage logs, requires no login password once the user’s account
is established, and automatically recognizes, connects and secures
authorized users immediately upon boot-up. The software complies with
the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), can
secure a wireless network in as little as 15 minutes and is compatible
with most wireless access points and routers. It runs on Windows 2000,
2003 and XP (Home/Professional) servers and workstations.

Healthcare Bioterrorism
Module
Isabel
Healthcare Inc. has released a bioterrorism module for its Web-based
diagnosis reminder and knowledge mobilizing system. Providers enter
patients’ symptoms into Isabel’s system through the Web, or from an EMR
interface, and the module instantly displays previous diagnoses that are
the results of biotoxins, nerve and chemical agents, and emerging
infectious diseases. Users can click on each diagnosis and access
treatment guidelines from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The
product is designed to assist providers who may be unfamiliar or lack
the clinical skills to quickly diagnose and treat patients who present
with these conditions.

Single Sign-on Application
BNX
Systems has released an upgrade to their Authenticated Sign-On. The new
5.5 version is designed to cut IT costs and reduce the time it takes to
deploy an enterprise single sign-on (E-SSO) solution. The product
includes a wizard-driven express mode for BNX Adapter Builder that makes
it possible to create E-SSO adapters for Web-, Windows- and
terminal-based applications by clicking on the screen—no programming or
scripting is required, though those advanced mode capabilities are
available for applications that need them. The product also now enables
users to input their sign-on credentials during initial login, saving
the time it traditionally takes administrators to manually input user
I.D. information. Supported authentications include: smart cards,
fingerprint scanners, facial recognition, iris readers and proximity
devices.

Natural Language Processing
Dictaphone
Corp. has introduced mdEssential, a software-based alternative to higher
priced EMR systems. The product includes voice dictation and speech
recognition and uses Dictaphone’s proprietary natural language
processing technology to “read” dictated text documents, extract
pertinent medical information and then add it to patients’ medical
records. Aimed at the growing population of clinics that have delayed
purchase of a traditional EMR system, the software’s “one-click”
approach helps physicians complete documentation quickly. It displays
patient medical details and histories on the screen that physicians can
edit with voice-driven templates and standard text blocks. The program
includes a query tool that searches for data within patients’ records
and provides links to the corresponding reference in the original source
document.
